Here are a few things that you can look out for in a solar panel installer:

Should be MCS certified and should use only MCS certified equipment: Ask the solar panel installers for proof of MCS certification.
Should provide Solar PV Panels as well as Solar Thermal Panels: Just check the solar energy solutions offered by the solar installer and you will know whether they provide ST + PV or only one of the two.
Should be experienced and well reputed: You can check the references of the solar power installer and you can also check with friends and family. Moreover, you can ask a few questions about their experience in roof-top solar panel installations, and experience in connecting to the grid (for solar pv systems)
Should provide several options: A good solar panels installer will provide you a number of options and sizes etc for solar panels. This means you can get what would best suit you and not something that suits the solar installer in terms of products/ services offered by them.
Should provide great value for money: The solar panels installer must give you a reasonable quote. However, besides the quote, you might as well want to go for someone who can help you get grants and incentives.
Should provide warranty: Do not forget to check this aspect. A warranty is a must and your solar panels provider should give it to you in written form.
