Pros and Cons of Solar Thermal

Pros and Cons of Solar Thermal

So, what are the Pros and Cons of using Solar Thermal? Let’s do a quick check:

Pros

  1. Your small contribution towards saving the Earth: The first and the most important benefit is that when you use a solar thermal system, you are making your own small contribution towards saving the environment and saving the Earth. It is these small steps/ contributions that are collectively going to create a difference in our lives and in the life of future generations.

  2. You save on your energy costs: If you keep an eye on reports in newspapers and on the Internet, you will find that the solar thermal systems are able to fulfil at least 33% of your hot water needs (for washing, bathing etc). However, the amount of savings are also dependent on how committed you are towards deriving the maximum benefits from solar thermal heating.

  3. Really easy to install and maintain: Yes, there is not much effort that is required towards maintaining these solar thermal energy systems and solar panels. So, you needn’t worry on that front especially if you buy from one of the reputed solar panels makers.

  4. Government incentives: UK government is committed towards renewable energy and there are incentives (Renewable Heat Incentive) and grants being doled out to people who are installing solar energy systems in their households. This means the cost of installing a solar thermal system is reduced and you get all the required cooperation from all quarters. Moreover, you also get money from government for operating your ST system (17-18 pence per KWh)

Cons

  1. Suitability of ST for your home: The solar thermal heating system is dependent on the orientation of your home and you also need to ensure that you have an appropriate space for installation of solar panels. When we say appropriate here, we mean that it should be a space that remains un-shaded, is south facing and receives enough direct sunlight for the solar thermal hot water systems to be effective. However, the way homes have been built in UK it is likely that your home would be suited for solar thermal energy.
  2. Only water heating facility, no electricity generation: Solar thermal energy systems are able to provide only water heating function; you cannot generate electricity from it. So, if you need electricity as well from the Sun, you will need to install a Solar PV system.
  3. Cost of solar panels: The solar panels are costly as compared to the conventional water heating systems; so, your initial investment will be high. However, it is offset due to the government incentives and due to the fact that solar energy is free (you save on your bills). Even after high initial costs, it is a sensible investment. But you need the cash initially.
