Types of Solar Collectors

Types of Solar Collectors

As mentioned earlier, Solar Collectors are the most important piece of equipment for solar thermal systems. The solar collectors are mounted in the form of solar panels which are installed on the roof tops in order to trap and harness solar thermal energy. There are two types of solar collectors:

  1. Evacuated Tubes: This type of solar collector system consists of a series of glass tubes that are well insulated by a vacuum inside the glass. This series of glass tubes is organised as a solar panel and serves as a solar thermal collector system.

  2. Flat Plate Collector Systems: This is a very simple solar thermal energy system that consists of a metal plate that is painted black and serves as a very good heat collector. Water runs in pipes (mostly copper pipes) that are attached to the metal sheet for heat exchange. The whole system is mounted in the form of solar panels that are installed on rooftops. The heated water is then consumed for domestic purposes. The metal plate is generally well insulated and has a glass/ transparent sheet in front through which sunlight can pass easily.

Both types of solar thermal systems are in use in UK. The primary difference between the two is their look and the temperature at which they operate the best.

The size of solar panels will, of course, be dependent on several factors; however; there are some specific pre-defined sizes available too that are suited to most houses in UK
